The Sony PXW-Z90V 4K HDR XDCAM camcorder combines phase-detection autofocus (AF) and HDR capabilities in a compact, palm-style body. It is well-suited for corporate events, broadcast news, and television production. The camcorder features a stacked 1″ Exmor RS CMOS sensor with UHD 4K resolution, a 12x Zeiss optical zoom lens, an OLED viewfinder, and a 3.5″ touchscreen LCD monitor. It supports recording in various formats, including XAVC Long for 4K and HD with different color sampling options. Additionally, it offers built-in streaming options and FTP capabilities.
The PXW-Z90V utilizes Fast Hybrid AF, which leverages a high-density placement of autofocus points and a new AF algorithm to provide precise focusing and tracking, particularly beneficial when capturing UHD 4K footage. In movie recording mode, phase-detection AF frames help monitor subject focus, and the 3.5″ touchscreen enables quick focus switching between subjects. The camera allows customization of AF Drive Speed, Tracking Depth Range, and Subject Switching Sensitivity to adapt to different subjects and shooting styles.
With Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG), the PXW-Z90V integrates smoothly into an HDR workflow, enabling seamless output of 4K recordings with high-quality contrast and resolution. The camcorder’s 12x optical Zeiss zoom lens and 18x 4K digital zoom (24x in HD) capture images with exceptional detail. It also includes an integrated ND filter function for greater exposure and depth-of-field control.
The PXW-Z90V supports Slow and Quick Motion, allowing variable frame rate recording, including up to 120 fps for HD video. It records footage to two SD memory card slots simultaneously or in relay mode for backup purposes. The 3G-SDI output facilitates integration with professional studio environments.
For audio recording, the PXW-Z90V provides two 3-pin XLR audio inputs for external microphones, along with a 3.5mm mini input. It also features a built-in microphone for convenience. When used in multicamera productions, the camcorder seamlessly integrates with Sony’s MCX-500 live switcher (sold separately).
The camera supports live streaming using RTMP/RTMPS protocols and is compatible with Sony’s XDCAM air for cloud-based proxy uploading and remote editing. It can be controlled remotely via Sony’s free Content Browser Mobile app, enhancing workflow flexibility.
